In yoga, we often speak about living in rhythm with nature. The body is not separate from the seasons. It responds to the lengthening days, the warming of the earth, and the subtle sense of momentum returning to life.
Spring arrives slowly. First there is the spark, then the rooting, then the blossoming. Astrology reflects this progression through the three zodiac signs that carry us through the season: Aries, Taurus, and Gemini.
Each one offers a slightly different quality of energy, and yoga gives us ways to embody these shifts. Quite often in our studio, Leah weaves astrology into her classes, especially her Morning Yin classes where there is more time for quiet contemplation.
Aries Season: Igniting Your Inner Fire
(late March – mid April)
Spring begins with a spark. Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, represents initiation, courage, and the return of vitality after winter’s quiet.
This is the moment when seeds break open underground and the first shoots push upward. In yoga practice, Aries invites us to wake up the body, stoke our digestive fire, and reconnect with our strength.
Yoga practices for Aries energy:
Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar)
A perfect practice for this time of year. The rhythm of breath and movement awakens circulation and energy after winter’s heaviness.
Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I)
Strong, steady, and forward-moving… this pose channels the bold determination associated with Aries.
Breath of Fire (Kapalabhati or Skull Shining Breath)
A cleansing breath that stimulates the solar plexus and energizes the system. Also wonderful for clearing the lungs of any spring allergies or congestion.
Reflection for the Aries season:
Where am I being invited to begin again?
Taurus Season: Rooting into the Earth
(late April – late May)
After the spark of Aries, Taurus arrives with a slower and more grounded rhythm. This is when spring truly settles in: trees leaf out, the earth softens, and gardens begin to grow.
Taurus is associated with the senses, nourishment, and the steady building of stability. In yoga, this is a time to slow down and inhabit the body more deeply.
Yoga practices for Taurus energy:
Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
Simple but powerful. Standing with awareness of the feet and legs helps cultivate Taurus’ grounded strength.
Tree Pose (Vrksasana)
A beautiful embodiment of rooting down while growing upward.
Slow Yin or Restorative practice
Longer holds allow the nervous system to soften and invite a feeling of embodied presence.
Reflection for the Taurus season:
What helps me feel rooted, nourished, and supported?
Gemini Season: Opening to Movement and Connection
(late May – late June)
As spring approaches summer, the energy becomes lighter and more social. Gemini carries the qualities of curiosity, communication, and movement.
In nature, this is when the air fills with birdsong, insects, and lively exchanges of life. In the body, Gemini encourages mobility, breath, and playful exploration.
Yoga practices for Gemini energy:
Twists (such as Revolved Chair or Supine Twist)
Twists stimulate circulation and create spaciousness through the spine, supporting the airy qualities of Gemini.
Shoulder and chest openers
Gemini is often associated with the lungs and breath, so poses that open the upper body can feel especially supportive.
Pranayama (conscious breathing)
Simple practices like alternate-nostril breathing bring clarity and balance to the mind.
Reflection for the Gemini season:
How can I move, breathe, and communicate more freely?
Practicing with the Rhythms of the Season
Spring yoga doesn’t need to be intense or complicated. The invitation is simply to move in harmony with the gradual awakening happening all around us.
First we ignite energy like Aries.
Then we root and stabilize like Taurus.
Finally, we expand outward like Gemini.
If we pay attention, we may notice the same cycle unfolding within our own bodies and lives.
Just like the budding branches of spring, our practice is always an opportunity to begin again.
We look forward to practicing with you online and in the studio throughout this spring season ahead!
